EP78: Psychedelics for Everyone with Matt Zemon

In today’s episode, I’m speaking with Matt Zemon, psychedelic medicine expert, best-selling author, and CEO and co-founder of Happÿÿ, a mental wellness company that specializes in psychedelic-assisted ketamine therapy along with digital therapeutics that promote life-transforming outcomes.
I learned so much in this interview with Matt. We talked about the benefits of therapeutic psychedelics, who could benefit from using them, and what micro-dosing is. We also talked about expanding human potential, which I really found intriguing.
As Matt said, psychedelics aren’t a cure; they are a catalyst to change. He shared some statistics that were pretty mind-blowing: in one study, 89% of individuals with depression and anxiety experienced an improvement after a ketamine protocol. There are other psychedelics that show promise in treatment for mental health disorders, though the only psychedelic that has been approved by the FDA for this specific use is esketamine, a nasal spray for treatment-resistant depression and acute suicidal thinking. Ketamine was approved as an anesthetic in 1970, but using it to address psychiatric conditions is considered “off-label,” so it can be accessed with a prescription from a medical provider.
Matt stressed the importance of finding the right prescriber who will help you in the way that best supports your healing, either with a guide, coaching and journaling, or in another way. What I found really interesting is the success people experience when they combine the ketamine therapy with setting a clear intention, meditation, journaling, and focusing on creating new, healthy habits.
Matt’s parting wisdom is:
- Remember not all providers are equal, so get clear about the treatment and support you desire if you choose to explore psychedelic therapy
- If you choose to go the retreat route, ask a lot of questions about number of participants, prescriber credentials and medical capabilities so you find the right fit for the experience you want to have
From the practical application of ketamine and other psychedelic therapies to the business model of Matt’s telehealth company, I found this conversation both intriguing and promising. Imagine a world where people can be free of the debilitating effects of trauma and treatment-resistant mental health conditions. To me, it’s mind-blowing.
